The innovative character of this seaworthy loading and unloading system for sand, shingle, minerals and grain, among others, was perfectly in line with the pioneering approach of Coops & Nieborg.
In 1999 Coops & Nieborg was taken over by a new board of directors. Founders Reg Coops and Ko Nieborg sold the majority holding in the company to five investors; the board of management, two silent partners and two investment companies. The original owners retained their involvement with the company as consultants.
After members of the management team had previously taken an interest in the company, in 2000 the new board took full control.
Demand for hatchcovers and hatchcover gantry cranes increased. In 1989 the Bodewes Gruno shipyard in Foxhol (Groningen province) was purchased and became the location for constructing pontoon hatch covers. In order to meet the increasing demand for ship sections Coops & Nieborg purchased the Ferus Smit shipyard in Hoogezand and equipped it for section production.
In 1985 the firm turned to building yachts and fishing boats in order to survive the slump in the shipbuilding industry. When the demand for components for the shipping industry picked up, they stopped building small boats but retain the expertise in house.
